Amsterdam-Noord sits across the IJ waterway from the historic center, and for most of the 20th century it was industrial territory — shipyards, warehouses and working docks that had little reason to appear on a tourist itinerary. Over the past decade, much of that industrial land has been converted into studios, restaurants and cultural venues, while still keeping enough of its raw, unpolished character to feel genuinely different from the canal ring.
Taking the ferry
Free passenger ferries run constantly from docks directly behind Centraal Station, take about three minutes to cross, and require no ticket or reservation — just walk on. Several routes exist; the one to Buiksloterweg is the shortest and most frequent, and the right choice for a first visit to NDSM or the area immediately across the water.
The ferry itself is worth the trip for the view alone — the skyline looking back at Centraal Station from the water is one of the better free views in the city.
NDSM Wharf
The main draw for most visitors is NDSM, a former shipbuilding yard about a 12-minute ferry ride further out. Massive industrial warehouses have been converted into artist studios, a floating hotel made from shipping containers, market events, and some of the city's best street art on the old dock walls. It has a deliberately unfinished, still-working feel compared to more polished redevelopments elsewhere in Europe.
A'DAM Lookout
Right by the short Buiksloterweg crossing, the A'DAM Tower has an observation deck and swing ride with panoramic views back over the city — a genuinely different perspective on Amsterdam than any view available from the ground.
Is it worth the trip?
If you have at least three days in Amsterdam, yes — it's free, fast, and shows a side of the city that most short visits never see. On a single-day trip, it's a reasonable thing to skip in favor of the canal ring and one major museum, since Noord rewards unhurried wandering more than a rushed checklist visit.
Getting back
Ferries run around the clock, including through the night, so there's no need to plan your return trip around a schedule — just walk to any dock and the next boat is rarely more than a few minutes away.
