Museums and many regular businesses adjust hours significantly; book accommodation well ahead if visiting on or around this date, since prices and demand spike hard.
Christmas & New Year's (December 25–26, January 1)
Most museums and many restaurants close or run reduced hours on December 25, with some closures extending to the 26th (Boxing Day, a genuine Dutch public holiday, not just a UK one). New Year's Eve sees widespread private and public fireworks throughout the city — a notably different, louder atmosphere than most visitors expect from Amsterdam.
Check specific museum and restaurant hours directly for late December — reduced or closed hours around Christmas and New Year's catch visitors off guard more than any other holiday period on this list.
Easter weekend (dates vary)
Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday all carry some public holiday status, though the impact on museums and shops is generally milder than Christmas — worth a quick check of specific opening hours if your trip falls on these dates, but not a reason to significantly restructure a visit.
Liberation Day (May 5) & Remembrance Day (May 4)
May 4 is a solemn day of remembrance for WWII victims, marked by a nationwide two-minute silence in the evening; May 5 celebrates liberation from occupation with festivals and events, particularly significant every five years on the "lustrum" anniversary. Neither closes the city the way King's Day does, but both carry real cultural weight worth being aware of if your trip overlaps.
