Spring (March–May)
Cool and changeable, typically ranging from around 6–16°C (43–61°F) across the season, with real day-to-day variation — a sunny 15°C afternoon can follow a cold, wet morning. Layers are essential; a proper rain jacket earns its place in the bag more than an umbrella does, since spring wind makes umbrellas genuinely impractical here.
Summer (June–August)
The warmest and driest stretch of the year, though "warm" is relative — typical highs run 18–23°C (64–73°F), with occasional warmer spells but nothing like southern European summer heat. Rain showers remain a real possibility even in peak summer; pack for a mix of sun and short bursts of rain rather than assuming a dry week.
A compact, packable rain jacket is worth carrying even on a summer trip — Amsterdam's summer showers tend to be short and sudden rather than all-day, so something quick to put on and take off beats a full umbrella most of the time.
Autumn (September–November)
Temperatures drop steadily through the season, from pleasant early-autumn days around 15–18°C (59–64°F) down toward 8–10°C (46–50°F) by November, with rain frequency increasing as the season progresses. A proper waterproof layer matters more here than in summer.
Winter (December–February)
Cold, gray and genuinely damp more often than snowy — typical highs sit around 4–7°C (39–45°F), with occasional colder snaps. Snow happens but isn't reliable or frequent; plan for cold rain and wind rather than a snowy postcard scene. A proper winter coat, waterproof shoes, and layers underneath matter more here than any single "warm enough" jacket.
