Keukenhof is a 32-hectare garden near Lisse planted with over seven million bulbs, and it exists purely as a seasonal showcase — it closes for the rest of the year once the tulips and other spring bulbs finish flowering. That narrow window is exactly why timing this trip carefully matters more than for almost any other Amsterdam day trip.
When it's actually open
Keukenhof runs for roughly eight weeks each year, from mid-March to mid-May, with the exact dates changing annually — always confirm current dates before booking anything else around this trip, since travel dates fixed months in advance can easily miss the window entirely.
Mid-to-late April is generally the most reliable peak-bloom window, but it varies year to year with the weather — check the garden's own real-time bloom updates closer to your travel dates rather than relying on a fixed calendar guess.
Getting there
Direct buses run from Amsterdam (including a stop near Schiphol Airport) straight to Keukenhof, taking roughly 40 minutes with no transfers. Combined tickets covering both the bus and garden entry are usually the simplest option and often cost less than booking separately.
Avoiding the crowds
Keukenhof gets genuinely busy, especially on weekends during peak bloom. Arriving right at opening is the single most effective way to see the gardens before tour buses arrive in volume — by early afternoon, the main pathways can be significantly more crowded than the same route two hours earlier.
What else to combine it with
The surrounding Bollenstreek (bulb region) has commercial tulip fields well beyond the garden's walls, visible from the road on the way in — worth a slower look if you have a rental car or bike rather than a fixed bus schedule. The historic town of Lisse itself is small but pleasant for a short stop.
Realistic timing
Most visitors need three to four hours to walk the gardens properly. Combined with travel time, this comfortably fills a full day rather than a half-day — plan accordingly rather than trying to stack another major activity onto the same day.
