Leiden is home to the Netherlands' oldest university, founded in 1575, and that academic identity still shapes the whole town — a lively, youthful atmosphere layered over genuinely historic canals and architecture, plus an unusually high concentration of good museums for a town this size. It's also where Rembrandt was born and spent his early years, before moving to Amsterdam.

Naturalis Biodiversity Center

A large, modern natural history museum covering evolution, biodiversity and the natural world through genuinely well-designed, engaging exhibits — one of the best natural history museums in the country and a strong option if you're traveling with kids, alongside our NEMO and Amsterdam-with-kids guides.

Rijksmuseum van Oudheden

The National Museum of Antiquities holds a genuinely significant Egyptian collection, including a full ancient Egyptian temple reconstructed inside the museum, alongside Greek, Roman and Near Eastern collections — a different kind of museum experience than anything in Amsterdam itself.

Local tip

Leiden's canals and narrow streets are genuinely pleasant to just wander without a fixed plan — the university atmosphere gives it a different, livelier energy than some of the more purely historic day trip towns on this list.

Rembrandt's Leiden

A self-guided walking route traces sites connected to Rembrandt's early life here, including a small commemorative marker near his birthplace — a lighter complement to the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam rather than a substitute for it.

Realistic timing

With two strong museums plus the town itself, Leiden rewards a full day more than most of the shorter day trips on this list — trying to fit it into a rushed half-day undersells what's actually here.

Getting there

Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal take around 35 minutes with no transfer, making the travel itself straightforward even for a full day out.
