Marken and Volendam sit on what was once the Zuiderzee coastline, both built around fishing traditions that mostly ended when a dam in the 1930s turned the open sea into the freshwater IJsselmeer lake. They're commonly done as a single combined day trip, connected by a scenic ferry crossing, and both trade heavily on traditional Dutch village imagery — worth knowing going in, so the trip matches what you actually want.
Volendam: livelier, more commercial
Volendam has a working harbor, a lively waterfront promenade lined with seafood restaurants, and shops selling traditional costume photo opportunities that are entirely aimed at visitors. It's genuinely pleasant for a walk and a fresh herring lunch, but go in knowing it's a functioning tourist destination first, quiet fishing village second.
The smoked eel and fresh herring from harbor-front stalls in Volendam are genuinely good and a reasonable reason on their own to make the stop.
Marken: smaller, quieter, more atmospheric
Marken was an island until a causeway connected it to the mainland in the 1950s, and it's kept a noticeably quieter, more residential feel than Volendam — traditional green-and-white wooden houses on stilts, a small harbor, and far fewer souvenir shops. It's the better stop of the two for a slower, more authentic-feeling wander.
How the two connect
A passenger ferry runs between Volendam and Marken, taking about 30 minutes and offering good views back across the water — genuinely one of the more pleasant parts of the day rather than just a transfer. Doing both in one day is a common and comfortable pairing thanks to this direct connection.
Is it worth the trip?
If your expectation is a polished, slightly touristy but still genuinely pleasant day out with good seafood and classic Dutch village scenery, yes. If you're hoping for an undiscovered, purely authentic fishing village experience, temper expectations — both villages know exactly why visitors come, and have shaped themselves around it to varying degrees.
Getting there and back
Direct buses run from Amsterdam to Volendam in about 30 minutes with no transfer; from there, the ferry to Marken and a bus back to Amsterdam complete a loop that comfortably fills a full day without feeling rushed.
