Naarden's double star-shaped fortification system, completed in the late 1600s, remains one of the most complete examples of this style of Dutch military engineering anywhere — a design intended to eliminate blind spots for defenders, creating the distinctive geometric star pattern that's genuinely striking to see, even from ground level where the full shape isn't visible at once.
Walking the fortifications
A walking and cycling path follows the top of the fortress walls and moats around the entire town, offering a genuinely different way to experience a historic site — most of the walk is outdoors, through green ramparts and past water-filled moats rather than through museum galleries.
The full star shape is only really appreciable from above — satellite or map images before your visit help you understand what you're walking through at ground level, where the geometry is harder to perceive directly.
The Fortress Museum (Vestingmuseum)
Located inside one of the original bastions, the museum explains the engineering logic behind the star design and includes access to underground gunpowder magazines and casemates — a genuinely tangible way to understand fortification design rather than just reading about it.
The town center
Inside the fortifications, Naarden's small historic center includes the Grote Kerk, notable for its acoustics and painted ceiling, and a handful of pleasant cafés — a compact, easily walkable town center that pairs well with the ramparts walk.
Combining it with Muiderslot
Naarden sits close enough to Muiderslot, covered in our castle day trip guide, that combining both into one day is realistic for visitors wanting a full day of Dutch military and defensive history — moated castle and star fortress in the same outing.
Getting there
A train followed by a short bus or 15-minute walk from the station gets you to Naarden-Vesting in around 35 minutes total from Amsterdam Centraal — straightforward, comfortably suited to a half-day trip.
