Rembrandtplein & Amsterdam Nightlife

Rembrandtplein started as a butter market in the 17th century before becoming, by the 20th, one of Amsterdam's two main nightlife squares — a role it still plays, ringed with bars, clubs and large late-night terraces. A statue of Rembrandt sits at its center, a detail most visitors here for the nightlife never actually look at.

What it's actually like

Loud, crowded and unapologetically touristy by night, especially on weekends — large group-friendly bars, bottle service clubs, and a genuinely mixed crowd of tourists and locals out for a big night rather than a quiet drink. It's not a place to go looking for an authentic local bar experience, and it isn't trying to be one.

Rembrandtplein vs. Leidseplein

Amsterdam's other major nightlife square, a short walk away near Vondelpark, has a broadly similar role — large bars, clubs, and a heavy tourist presence — but skews slightly younger and more backpacker-oriented, while Rembrandtplein leans a bit more toward clubs and a dressier crowd. Neither is meaningfully "better"; picking between them comes down to which specific venues you're after.

Where locals actually go instead

For a genuinely local bar experience, the Jordaan's brown cafés and De Pijp's neighborhood bars are the better bet — smaller, quieter, and built around regulars rather than tourist turnover. If nightlife specifically is the goal but crowds aren't, look toward De Pijp and the areas just off Rembrandtplein rather than the square itself.

Practical notes

Expect cover charges at clubs on weekend nights, dress codes at some venues, and noticeably higher drink prices than elsewhere in the city — standard for a dedicated nightlife district, but worth budgeting for if you're planning a full night here rather than a single stop.
