The Czar Peter House
A small wooden house where Russia's Peter the Great briefly stayed in 1697 while studying Dutch shipbuilding techniques incognito — a genuinely unusual footnote in European history, now preserved as a small museum, protected inside a larger brick shelter building to guard against flooding and decay.
The Inntel Hotel's stacked-house architecture is worth seeing even without staying there — visible from the station area and a genuinely striking piece of modern Dutch design.

The distinctive green-painted wooden houses associated with Zaanse Schans aren't limited to that open-air museum — genuine examples exist throughout Zaandam and the surrounding Zaan region, worth noticing if you're walking beyond the main tourist route.
Combining it with Zaanse Schans
Since Zaandam sits directly on the train route to Zaanse Schans, a short stop here on the way there or back adds real variety to the day without much extra travel time — worth 30–45 minutes rather than rushing straight through.
Getting there
Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal take under 20 minutes, making Zaandam one of the quickest, lowest-effort additions to a day already built around Zaanse Schans.
