Spring (March–May)

The tulip season draw makes April and May genuinely busy, especially around Keukenhof's opening weeks. Weather is unpredictable — expect a mix of sun and rain, with days that can shift between both. This is the season to visit specifically for flowers and lengthening daylight, accepting that you'll share the city with more visitors as a trade-off.

Summer (June–August)

Peak season by every measure: longest daylight hours, warmest weather, highest prices, and the biggest crowds at major museums and attractions. King's Day (April 27) and the summer festival calendar bring their own spikes. Worth it if long evenings and outdoor terrace culture matter to you; worth avoiding if crowd tolerance is low.

Local tip

Even in peak summer, weekday mornings before 10am at major sights feel meaningfully calmer than the same spot two hours later — timing within the day matters almost as much as timing within the year.

Autumn (September–November)

Genuinely one of the most underrated windows: crowds thin out noticeably after early September, prices soften, and the canal-side trees turn color through October. Weather turns cooler and wetter as the season progresses, but this is consistently the season locals recommend to visitors who ask.

Winter (December–February)

The quietest season by far, with the lowest prices on accommodation. December brings festive lighting and markets; January and February are genuinely cold, gray, and the shortest days of the year. Museums are at their least crowded, making this the best season specifically for a relaxed, unhurried museum-focused trip.

Dates worth planning around

King's Day (April 27) turns the entire city into a street party and dramatically affects accommodation prices and availability — book well ahead if visiting then, or actively avoid it if crowds aren't your thing. Major museum exhibitions and the city's festival calendar also shift demand throughout the year in ways worth checking before fixing travel dates.
